2019 OHL Draft Ranking: January’s Top-160

Just like that, we find ourselves flipping the calendar into 2019.

With just three months remaining until the 2019 OHL Draft, the rankings are certainly beginning to solidify, as the list of this year’s top prospects continue to impress on the season’s biggest stages.

And if there was ever a perfect way to cap off the year of 2018, the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic delivered. Featuring 60 of North America’s best 2003-born teams, the tournament provides an annual opportunity to compare and contrast the top prospects in a battle of best-on-best hockey.

2018’s version of the Holiday Classic did not disappoint. In a showing of tremendous talent and potential, it was once again the Don Mills Flyers who battled their way to the championship, fending off the Toronto Red Wings, Ottawa Capitals, Gentry Galaxy, and Toronto Nationals on their way to capturing the banner.

Despite perfect 4-0-0 round robin records by the Toronto Marlboros, Gentry Galaxy, Whitby Wildcats, Ottawa Ambassadors, and Mississauga Rebels, the Flyers once again proved their ability to battle and grind out victories against the tournament’s top competition.

In a memorable semi-final matchup, the Don Mills Flyers took down one of the USA’s top 15U teams in the Gentry Galaxy by a score of 3-2, but not before they fell behind by two early in the contest. Gentry offered the Flyers another measuring stick matchup – similar to their unforgettable game against Detroit Compuware in the Silver Stick – and Don Mills did not disappoint.

Showcasing a dynamic team system along with high-end talent from top to bottom of their lineup, the Flyers continued to prove that they are undoubtedly the top Minor Midget team in Ontario, and perhaps one of the best ever.

Several weeks before the Holiday Classic was yet another of the year’s most anticipated showcases. The 2018 GTHL Top Prospects Game featured 40 of the league’s top prospects, and did not disappoint. In a high-spirited and competitive contest, Ryan Del Monte led his team to victory as he finished a slick cross-ice pass in overtime.

However, it was the Don Mills Flyers’ usual suspect who forced the game into the extra frame in the first place, as a hectic final minute finally concluded when Brandt Clarke found a loose puck in a scrum and pushed it past the crowd in a buzzer-beater that electrified a jam-packed Scotiabank Pond.

January’s Top-160 Prospects

As we continue to expand our rankings in anticipation of the April 6th OHL Draft, we are reminded of the immense depth of this year’s crop of prospects. Teams would be wise to put emphasis on the middle rounds of the draft, where there will be a number of sleeper picks remaining, many of which should be able to jump straight into the OHL for the 2019-20 season. Without a doubt, this year’s edition of the OHL Draft will produce a number of top prospects for the 2021 and 2022 NHL Drafts.

A trend that we’ve focused on all year long has been the multitude of high-end NCAA commitments. This month, 10 of the top-40 prospects are verbally committed to an NCAA program, leaving plenty of variability for the final draft order.

Shane Wright and Brennan Othmann celebrate a one-timer goal at the GTHL Top Prospects Game. Wright was later named team MVP, along with Ryan Del Monte.

December was another imperative month to keep a close eye on, with league play winding down and playoff battles becoming increasingly intense day-by-day. Further, the Marlboros Holiday Classic provided a crucial look into the development of players over the past four months, while also pitting them against top competition from the entire OHL Draft region and beyond.

Finally, here are January’s top-160 prospects for the 2019 OHL Draft, along with 20 honourable mentions.

Note: This list features the Top-160 skaters available for the 2019 OHL Draft, and does not include goaltenders. Also, it is not a mock draft.
