2019 OHL Draft Ranking: February’s Top-220

Continuing with the expansion of our 2019 OHL Draft Rankings, the 2003-born draft class features a ton of parody, notably within the 50-100 range, as well as the 200+ range.

Unbelievably, we already find ourselves in the midst of playoff season around Ontario’s Minor Midget leagues.

With only two months remaining until the 2019 OHL Draft, our rankings are becoming more and more consistent, with only small variations from month-to-month within the first few rounds.

The month of January providing some very intriguing late-season matchups as teams across the province were vying for positions in the regular season standings, battling for advantageous matchups in the first round of the playoffs.

In the GTHL, a tight battle for the 7th and 8th seeds came to an exciting finish, with the Vaughan Kings and North York Rangers scratching and clawing their way to playoff positions over the challenging Markham Majors and Mississauga Reps.

Perhaps most notably was the undefeated season capped off by the Don Mills Flyers. Dominant from start to finish, the team finished the regular season with an unheard of 30-0-3 record.

In the ETA, the Whitby Wildcats cruised to the league’s top record, an impressive 30-1-5. As for the final playoff positions in each division, the Kingston Jr. Frontenacs were able to fend off the Central Ontario Wolves, securing the 4th seed in the East by two points. Over in the West, the Ajax-Pickering Raiders narrowly beat out the Richmond Hill Coyotes for the 4th seed, finishing just one point ahead of their competitors. Meanwhile, the North Central Predators captured the division title with a 21-8-5 record.

However, it was the Alliance that arguably had the greatest finish of all the leagues. A four team battle for the league’s top seed resulted in the Brantford 99ers coming away on top, with a 21-8-4 record and 46 points. One point behind them was a three-way tie for the 2nd seed, with the Wolves, Rangers, and Knights all finishing with 45 points.

As well, there was great excitement surrounding the battle for the 7th and 8th seeds, which ended up in another three-way tie between the Chiefs, Cyclones, and Lakers. Unfortunately, Huron-Perth would lose out on a playoff positions after determination of tiebreakers.

Last but not least, the SCTA provided some drama as well. After riding a hot streak to end the season, the Halton Hurricanes came away with the 1st seed, sporting a 23-6-3 record. In a heated battle for playoff positions, there was yet another three-way tie for the 5th, 6th, and 7th seeds, split between the Eagles, Admirals, and Highlanders.

Up in Northern Ontario, there were a few special moments in the month of January. First and foremost, Team NOHA’s roster for the 2019 OHL Cup was revealed. Loaded with talent from the Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves, the team will certainly be one to watch and could be regarded as one of the tournament’s darkhorse’s.

Further, in the HEO, Mason McTavish set a new record for points in a single season with 72 in just 37 games for the Pembroke Lumber Kings. McTavish surpassed the previous record set by Peterborough Pete and Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, who posted 70 back in 2015-16.

February’s Top-220 Prospects

Continuing with the expansion of our 2019 OHL Draft Rankings, we have found it increasingly difficult to set a consensus amongst some of the later-round picks. Undoubtedly, some teams are going to come away from the draft with a player that some would have foreseen going several rounds earlier. The 2003-born draft class features a ton of parody, notably within the 50-100 range, as well as the 200+ range.

As with every month thus far, we’ve been tracking the impact of NCAA commitments in this year’s draft, especially with high-end prospects. For February, there are 10 players within the top-31 which are verbally committed to an NCAA program. That situation will cause a few headaches come draft day, as players ranked within the top two rounds could potentially climb as many as 10 spots on April 6th.

January offered yet another unique look into how this year’s draft class performs under pressure. Instead of the usual pressures of tournament play, this past month gave a look into how this year’s prospects would perform under the circumstances of a late-season playoff push. When the season is on the line and every game has substantial impacts, it’s the top players who often come to make a difference, a trend we noticed across Ontario during January.

With that said, let’s dive right into the ranking. For your convenience, here are the links to Prospect Pipeline’s previous four rankings thus far, as well as our mid-season goaltender ranking. Feel free to take a look back and compare some of the changes that have occurred over the past five months.

Finally, here are February’s Top-220 prospects for the 2019 OHL Draft, along with 30 honourable mentions.

Note: This list features the Top-220 skaters available for the 2019 OHL Draft, and does not include goaltenders. Also, it is not a mock draft.

  1. Reading through the list of the top 220 players is a glaring absence. Zach Dean belongs on that list in the top 30 players. He plays for the Toronto Young Nationals and is the top scoring forward on the team. All these players deserve the recognition they have earned it. But Dean’s absence from this list puts in question the validity of the rankings and why some players are missing from this list.
I suppose all that matters right now is winning each playoff game one shift at a time.

    1. Hi Frank. The reason why Zachary Dean of the Toronto Young Nationals isn’t included within our OHL Draft Rankings — and never will be — is because he was born in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. Since he was born in Newfoundland, he isn’t eligible for the OHL Draft but, instead, the QMJHL Entry Draft. Were he eligible for the OHL Priority Selection, he would have unquestionably been a top-10 prospect if not higher.
