The 2018-19 minor midget hockey season has come to an official end, and what a campaign it was.
Over the course of the past seven months, parents, scouts, and fans alike have been treated to a breadth of tantalizing hockey — all of which taking part throughout the hockey hotbed which is the province of Ontario. And, through the thousands of games, numerous tournaments, and whack of postseason play completed, a decisive order has now become clear with respect to the prospects eligible for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.
While it certainly wasn’t easy, the time has come to present our final 2019 OHL Draft Ranking of the season. Although Shane Wright of the Don Mills Flyers stood atop our leaderboard from the start to the finish, a secondary class of elite prospects has since emerged which will undoubtedly challenge Wright in the OHL in the years ahead and beyond.
Moreover, those chosen outside of the second-round in this year’s Priority Selection hold brighter futures than ever before. Owing to the depth of this year’s draft class, prospects projected to be chosen in the middle of the event and towards its end hold not only tremendous skill but the potential to develop into quality players in the major-junior ranks.
With all of this being said and our top-300 list looming below, let’s take a moment to highlight five prospects ready to explode before diving head first into our final ranking of the campaign.
Five Sparkling Gems
Although the five youngsters listed below are well-known players and highly valuable prospects eligible for the 2019 OHL Draft, each of which has the potential to develop into a high-end player at the major-junior level. While highly regarded, these prospects have a great deal of room to grow in the near future and could very well develop into five of the top players chosen within the 2019 OHL Draft.
In short, you’ll want to keep an eye on these youngsters in the years ahead.
Judd Katz – (LD)
2018-19 Team: Mississauga Rebels (GTHL)
A towering and physically intimidating defenceman, Judd Katz began to come into his own as the 2018-19 GTHL season wound down. Of improved skating and on-ice intelligence, Katz has developed into a stellar two-way defender who can contribute to his team’s success at both ends of the ice. Further, owing to his heavy shot and natural offensive instincts, Katz could develop into a potent threat at the OHL-level.
Braeden Kressler – (C)
2018-19 Team: Mississauga Senators (GTHL)
Although of a smaller stature, Braeden Kressler was an offensive star for the Mississauga Senators this past GTHL season. Often relied upon to generate offence single-handedly, Kressler has the ability to cut through opposing defences and is confident and consistent in his ability to do so. A natural playmaker who also features a terrific shot, Kressler can contribute in all three zones and brings a well-rounded and mature game to the ice with each passing shift.
Logan Mailloux – (LD)
2018-19 Team: Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Logan Mailloux’s play grew substantially over the course of the 2018-19 campaign, and so much so that the youngster now stands as a likely first round choice ahead of the 2019 OHL Draft. Of impressive size, Mailloux is a purposeful and fluid skater who can traverse all three zones of the ice with absolute ease. A crisp passer who also features a powerful shot, Mailloux can play a starring role at both ends of the ice and has become a defender who can be relied upon to play major minutes regardless of the situation.
Connor Punnett – (LD)
2018-19 Team: North Central Predators (ETA)
While projected to be selected in the second-round of the 2019 OHL Draft, Connor Punnett has the skill-set and abilities of a first-round talent. Of impressive size and strength, Punnett also happens to be a sturdy skater who can lead the rush and establish his team’s attack in the offensive zone. Surely ready to play in the OHL as soon as next season, Punnett is a stable and concrete defender who should come to play a starring role for his teams in the years ahead.
Marko Sikic – (C)
2018-19 Team: Kitchener Jr. Rangers (Alliance)
The Kitchener Jr. Rangers were a powerful force in Alliance hockey this past season, and were led offensively by a towering and potent centre by the name of Marko Sikic. An intimidating sight for opposing defenders, Sikic is a fleet-footed centre who can devise and implement scoring plays in addition to blasting the puck into the back of the net. Although projected to be made a third-to-fourth round pick in the 2019 OHL Draft, Sikic has the skill-set and determination necessary to break into major-junior hockey as soon as next season.
The Top-300 Prospects
Well, here they are, our top-300 prospects eligible for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.
In retrospect, the 2018-19 minor midget season has been incredibly entertaining and eye-opening. Right off of the bat, it became clear that this year’s draft class was going to be a special one. As deep, if not deeper than any Priority Selection class that has come before, this year’s crop of prospects are not only immensely talented but endlessly promising. In fact, players projected to be chosen in the third-to-fifth round of the 2019 OHL Draft could very well have been top-40 prospects in other seasons — a true testament to the skill present within modern day minor hockey.
With this being said and without any further ado, let’s dive into our final OHL Draft ranking of the 2018-19 campaign. In this edition, we’ve removed our honourable mentions section and have expanded our list to rank the top-300 prospects eligible — in our opinion.
